Re: Notice of Intent - ExxonMobil Pipeline Company
Geotechnical Core Drill in Riverside Park, Laurel, MT
Dear Mayor Olson:
Please accept this letter as ExxonMobil Pipeline Company's Notice of Intent to perform two
Geotechnical Core Drills in Riverside Park in the City of Laurel during the week of July 18,
2011. Please see the attached aerial photo showing the approximate location of the two Core
Drills. The purpose of the proposed Core Drills is to obtain detailed soil information in
preparation for ExxonMobil's installation of a new pipeline crossing the Yellowstone River
through the use of Horizontal Direction Drill (HDD) technology.
The Core Drill services will be performed in accordance with generally accepted standards of
the geotechnical engineering profession. Equipment to be utilized during each Core Drill
process will include a standard drill rig to perform a drill equal to or less than 6- inches, a trailer,
water truck and pickup truck. During the Core Drill. standard penetration resistance tests will
be made at five foot intervals in the upper level alluvial soils and weathered claystone bedrock.
When competent claystone bedrock is encountered. the formation will be cored utilizing HQ
diamond coring techniques. The upper level alluvial soils will be drilled using hollow stem
augers and when competent claystone bedrock is encountered the technique described above
will be utilized. Once drilling is completed. a pipe will be extended to the bottom of the hole and
bentonite grout will be pumped in from the bottom up. Drill cuttings will be disposed of properly.
Groundwater, if encountered at the time of investigation. will be observed and the depth
reported. An ExxonMobil employee will supervise the drill team of 4 -5 people. the field
investigation, log the test borings, and select sample locations during drilling. We anticipate the
above described work within Riverside Park will take no more than 4 -5 days to complete.
ExxonMobil shall at all times indemnify and hold harmless The City of Laurel from and against any
and all claims. demands. causes of action, liabilities. cost and expense of every nature. including
reasonable attorneys fees which may be sustained or incurred arising out of activities associated
with the Core Drills, or arising out of ExxonMobil's presence or operations hereunder. except
when caused by the negligence of The City of Laurel, their agents or assigns.
