approached the Congressional delegations when the Billings Police Department was
successful in receiving a COPS grant for funding their SRO's.
Interagency Team - The Team is now in place. Dale Ahrens, Laurel '5 K -12 Drug Free
School Coordinator, and a representative from the High School will be Laurel's team
members.
Tour of Youth Assessment Center - A date for the tour has not been set, but it will be
planned now that new City council members have been elected. They will be
encouraged to attend along with school district personnel and anyone from the
community who is interested.
Drug and alcohol treatment for Laurel youth - Efforts to have treatment available in
Laurel have not been successful, so there is a need to find a way to transport Laurel
youth to treatment in Billings. This will be the topic of the next Task Force meeting.
Dave Ward, probation officer will be invited. Ken Olson will gather information about
the Senior Citizen bus and invite someone familiar with that program to the meeting.
Future plans - A list of the ideas generated at the public meetings held during the first
year of the Task Force (1998 -99) were passed out and members were asked to review
the ideas and note any which have been accomplished or are in progress. This list
will be discussed as a basis for future activities.
Additional activities for Laurel youth was a high priority at all public meetings. The
Task Force will sponsor a brainstorming session in January for sharing information
about present activities and new possibilities.
