5:30 P.M. at CITY HALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Chuck Rodgers LuAnne Engh
Lee Barndt Wally Hall
OTHERS PRESENT: Cathy Gabrian Matt Wheeler
Dick Metzger Jerry Allen
Roger Perkins Kurt Markegard
• Public Input—None
• Entrance gate columns and fence—Chuck spoke to Shawn Sweeney of Sweeney
Masonry. He will give us a good price to do four columns if the city does some prep
work. We would need to pull the two columns on the north, pour new concrete pads and
clear the old fencing. The rock would come from the same quarry as the rock for the
Yellowstone County Veterans' Cemetery. Wally questioned the need for gates since the
city does not close them. Lee stated the cemetery curbing is broken on the front and
needs fixing, possibly with a step.
• Fencing—There was discussion regarding the fence, stating we do not want a solid fence
across the front of the cemetery but may want something on the sides of the columns.
Craig Whitely is a local man who works with iron and LuAnne will contact him to see if
he is interested in giving us suggestions about fencing for the cemetery.
• Pump and pipe—Roger Perkins—Roger Perkins, a water resource engineer,passed out
information and maps about a sprinkling system for the cemetery. There are 16 acres to
irrigate and that can expand to 20 acres. With our current irrigation system, we are
putting down too much water and could save money in electricity by cutting back. He
said the pump is performing well and running cool, with no vibration. The pump is wired
at 260 and needs to be at 480 to work properly for the new system. The pipeline from the
pump to the cemetery is a 4-inch line and needs to be replaced with a larger line.
Jerry Allen with Innovative Irrigation presented his proposal for the sprinkler system and
went over the cost. It was stated the bid is only good for a short period of time. Due to
the cost of the project, the city would be required to go out for bid and would need to
have a set of plans. This would run several thousand dollars. It was felt the first order of
business would be to get a new line across the road. There was discussion about
relocating the pumping station to the east side of First Avenue at a cost of$10,000 to
$15,000 versus putting in a new pipeline for about $2500.
Kurt said the ideal time would be to advertise in January and have the work done in
March, so it's ready to test when we get ditch water.
Cemetery Commission Meeting
June 28,2010,Page 2
Motion by LuAnne, seconded by Lee to direct the PWD to budget $90,000 in the CIP
Fund for a sprinkler system and to submit it to council. Motion carried.
• Gathering area—Dick Metzger attended the meeting on behalf of the American Legion.
He asked that more concrete be poured around the base of the American flag to make it
easier to raise and lower. Kurt and Matt stated the city will take care of it. Dick also said
the Legion would like a directory placed in the cemetery so visitors can find loved ones'
graves. This was discussed and at this time, it is not possible.
Benches for the gathering area were discussed and it was suggested that we use
rubberized expanded steel. It was felt that seating for 50 people would be adequate.
This will be discussed at the next meeting.
Motion by LuAnne, seconded by Lee to recommend that the old flag pole be donated to
the American Legion for their disposal. Motion carried.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 19'h at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cathy Ga rian
