HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 04.13.2010 Minutes of the Laurel Public Library Board of Trustees April 13, 2010 Attending: Clair Killebrew (presiding), Bruce McCullough, Christy Smith, Nathan Baillet, and Nancy Schmidt Minutes: The minutes of March 9, 2010 were read and approved by all present. Correspondence: Thelma Lewis made a donation to the library in the amount of $40.00. Claire will send a Thank You note. Circulation Report: Traffic for March 2010 had increased 31% over March 2009. Circulation of all items increased 11% for March 2010 over the previous year. Individually, books and related items increased 20% and media materials increased 41% over March 2009. Internet computer use rose 15% in March 2010 (772 users) over March 2009. Computer use by children also increased 44% (34 users) over the previous year. County patrons make up 30% of our registered patrons, city patrons make up 65 %, and 5% of the registered patrons includes non - resident and /or district registrants. Old Business: Nathan has set up various meetings to discuss the development of the Foundation. Bruce contacted Peggy about the Library Trust development. Information given was that the Trust was developed as a scholarship group and for future library needs. After further discussion it was decided that Nathan would contact Peggy Arnold about paperwork concerning the development of the Trust (i.e. policy, by- laws, and financial statements). There have been no further developments on the ARRA -BTOP funding. Information will most likely not be available until late August or early September. Christy has offered to take the large "thought" sheets from our meeting with Suzanne Reymer and consolidate them into an organized Library Vision. Bruce will take a copy of the Library Community Vision Plan to the Laurel Outlook. No progress has been made on the Overdue Collections Policy. This may have to be put aside until a later date. Nancy is continuing to work on the Technology Plan at this time. A new Trustee is needed to serve on the Library Board. After attempts to reach Rachelle failed, Clair requested that Rachelle be removed from the Board as a Trustee. Mike Dewey has again expressed interest in serving on the board. After some discussion, it was decided that Nancy would post an ad in the Laurel Outlook advertising for letters of interest. Clair and Nancy attended the Federation Meeting in Big Timber on March 20, 2010. Information was distributed about the new certification process for directors, support staff, and trustees. The next Federation meeting is scheduled for September 11, 2010. The Laurel Federated Women's Club held their annual Play & Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday, March 31 We had 150 people attend this year, 73 children & 77 adults. New Business: Nancy gave an extensive report on her trip to Bozeman for the Montana Library Association. Some of the areas that she attended workshops for included: Library Law, original cataloguing, target marketing, making your library genealogy friendly, homelessness at the library, a presentation by Jack Horner, and walk -about bingo. The Laurel Public Library received recognition for taking part in the Collection Management Honor Roll. Nancy reported that Geralyn will be taking about 8 weeks off from the library to have surgery on her feet. She is expected to be back part time in 6 weeks with her doctor's approval. Fred will help fill in the hours that Geralyn will be out on sick leave. The City has an ad in the paper concerning requests for proposals to replace the library roof. Bid opening is set for April 12, 2010 at 3:00 pm. Nancy is planning on attending the bid opening so she has a idea about who may be doing the replacement. Nancy stated that the idea of library partnerships was presented to her at MLA by DeAnn Redman, assistant director at Parmly Billings Library. One idea that Parmly will be moving forward with is the state -wide library card with no card application fees. This may be one area that Laurel may want to explore also.
