Norman said they received permission from the Cemetery Board back in the mid 1990's to put up small metal arches behind the stone. They feel that have followed the rules but everyone else has not. If they have to remove the arches, they are concerned that the holes could fill with water, freeze and compromise the cement foundation. Mayor Olson said there is an issue and we are trying to correct it. Their graves do look nice but many have been overlooked and detract from our cemetery. Norm Stamper said we cannot allow one and not another; we would have no way of controlling it. Kurt stated that he looks at the decorations from a maintenance and safety standpoint. Decorations will be in the way of sprinklers. LuAnne said in fairness to others and according to our regulations, no wreaths are allowed except for the specific holidays. Ruth said she just wanted to know what will happen and she will see what can be done about the holes in the concrete. Memorial marker — Chuck spoke to Butch Bailey and told him we wanted the memorial maker for the Rosselot family done by Memorial Day. He said he would pick up the plaque from City Hall tomorrow and hopefully get started next week. • Installation of Flag Poles — The flag poles have been ordered. Norm said we are getting close to Memorial Day and we want the poles in place. He suggested doing the flags now, then come back and do the curb and planters. The pad should be done next week. There was discussion regarding curbing options, the slope of the ground, and backfilling. Kurt stated that the flag poles all need to be set at the same height and he could use a laser to level them. Once we receive the ground sleeves, the foundations can be poured and the city crew can place the poles. It was decided to get two bids for setting the foundations for the flag poles and the curbing. Motion by Dick, seconded by LuAnne to get bids and make a decision about installation of the flag poles. Motion carried. Cemetery Commission Meeting April 22, 2010 Page 2 Chuck will meet with both Charlie White and Hank Guerrero and get bids. We will take the low bid and the Mayor can sign a small service contract. • Podium Information — Chuck has a design for the podium. Mayor Olson will check with Cenex management to see if they would allow them to build it in their shop. The emblem for the front would be made from stainless steel with an eagle design cut in it. Kurt said it would take a water jet cutter to do this intricate work and it was mentioned that Wood's Powr Grip has this cutter. It was suggested that someone contact them to see if it could be done. Norm said there are many designs for these cutters on the internet. • Information for Kiosk — The kiosk has been placed at the cemetery and will be painted soon. Kurt suggested making a sign for it out of a trex type material that says "City Cemetery Information" routered in the boards. Mayor Olson will check to see who did the work on the boards at Kids Kingdom. There was discussion regarding information for the kiosk. LuAnne worked on our decoration/flower policy to make it less confusing. She made a sample of what could be enlarged and put in the kiosk. It was suggested at a previous meeting to have the letters at least 2" in size. Kurt said the city has a plotter that will print large items and Gary Colley could help LuAnne with this. We will put the information up and then take suggestions to fine tune it as time goes on. • Other — The Mayor stated he met with Commissioner Kennedy and the Airport Authority. The acre the city was willing to give them for a shop is in the impact zone for the airport. No law says they can't build there but the Airport Authority prefers they don't. It was suggested that they place their shop next to the Masonic Temple. The Mayor will pass this information on to them. Norm said he will contact the Laurel Outlook to do an article about the cemetery. He would like to have them take pictures of the new gathering area to include in the article. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Cathy Gabrian
