Subject: Community Transportation Safety Plan Assistance Program
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is requesting applications from Montana
communities interested in receiving technical assistance and funding for the development of
Community Transportation Safety Plans. Local matching funds are not required.
The goal of this new program is to enable communities to identify, analyze, address and track
their specific transportation safety issues. Success of these plans requires a comprehensive
and coordinated effort with significant community involvement and will focus on addressing
the four "E's" of traffic safety: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency
medical services.
If you are interested in being considered to receive assistance for development of a safety
plan; please submit a written request signed by the Mayor and Chairperson of your City
Commission. In addition to the letter, please include a detailed proposal for the plan,
documentation of community support from key safety stakeholders, and identification of the
project sponsor. Community support should include letters of commitment from jurisdictions
and stakeholder that will participate in the development and implementation of the plan and
be responsible for future transportation safety improvements. The project sponsor must be a
local government employee.
The enclosed brochure provides more information on the program. Sample letters and
proposal checklist are available at:

If you have any questions about the funding or application process, please contact Pam
Langve-Davis at (406) 444-7646.
Sincerely,
J' Lynch
