May 20, 2009 Bright n' Beautiful
11:30 a.m.
President Helen Johnson called the meeting to order and roll was taken. There were no
corrections or additions to the April 15th minutes.
Janice Blansett reviewed the Balance: Sheet and the Rrofit & Loss Statement as of April 30t.
Janice submitted her letter of resignation as ire eftfive :line 30, 2009 as she is moving to
Michigan. Jean Carroll moved to accept her resignation with regrets. There was discussion as
to who will replace Janice. Jean Carroll who works for an accountant will consider it.
Members present approved. She will call Janice sometime after the Memorial Day holiday to
set up a meeting date to receive some training.
Carolyn reported on the results of the Great American Cleanup to date:
46 groups (27 groups cleaned on the 25 h) = 690 volunteers
27 Public Schools = 5,250 students
5 Christian Schools = 240 students
8 Country Schools = 600 students
Total: 6,780 volunteers and 119,4751bs. of litter
BBQ -150 served
GAP West Broadcasting - $2,015 value of PSA's
Laurel: No report at this time, Chuck said Carolyn should contact Chris Rosenberg
Shepherd: Jackie Schleder will compile the results and get them to Carolyn
8 tires were dropped of at Senior High parking lot.
The Family Services Van was (filled with clothing and some small household items.
Byron Whitney is still working on getting our Web page up and rig He is making good
progress so it should be soon.
Carolyn attended the Waste Not Recycling Conference on May I 't which was held at the
Crowne Plaza. To remain in good standing, KAB requires that the executive director attend 8
hours of training a year.
Carolyn sent an updated list of our Adopt A Spot sites to all board members. There is one
correction. The Heights Lions Club cleans Lake Elmo Drive from Wicks to Lake Elmo. The
contact person is Harry Axhne, 256-3605. Our newest site is on the south side of Central from
32nd to Shiloh and is adopted by Lisa Brandt a teacher at Head Start and her husband. The sign
reads, "A Concerned Family".
A newly formed group of citizens has organized Friends of Pioneer Park. Their mission is to
remove Disc Golf from Pioneer Park. Destruction has been done to several trees and some
.personal injuries have occurred. The game has also been a draw to gangs and drug use.
Families living by the park no longer feel safe allowing their children to play in the park. They
are circulating a community wide petition to have the game removed that will be presented to
- the City Council.. They are seeking endorsement from Bright n' Beautiful:. Chuck said that we
as an organization cannot endorse their proposal as individual opinions of board members could
differ. Individuals are open to sign if they wish. Members present were in agreement.
The United Way Day of Caring is Thursday September 17th. We need to post our project on the
Web by June 30th. The last two years we have worked at Lake Elmo State Park cleaning up
trails, etc. Carolyn asked for other project suggestions. Jean Carroll suggested the Conservation
Education Center across from Riverfront Park, Carolyn will contact Norm Schoenthal. Jean
Carroll will also look for a project in Laurel. A Bright n' Beautiful volunteer needs to work
with the volunteers.

ADDITION TO MRRMS OF MAY 20, 2009
The Award Banquet/Silent Auction is scheduled for Wednesday October 28`h at the Crowne
Plaza. Nominations for Beautification and Environmental Stewardship awards are needed.
Please bring your nominations to the June 17d meeting. Discussion also took place on the
Silent Auction. Those present agreed board n ben need to contribuW a minimum of S items
to the silent auction with the ma rm amount being open.
