COUNCIL CHAMBERS Members Present: Norm Stamper Chuck Dickerson Clete Knaub Emelie Eaton Dick Fritzler Others Present Derek Yeager Mark Guy Norm Stamper, Co-Chairman, opened the meeting by introducing Clete Knaub, who is the new member on the Emergency Services Committee. An update was given by Derek on the Laurel Fire-Ambulance Department. He handed out a Fire- Ambulance Department briefing of current status, service levels, and future challenges. He also included a statistical analysis that listed the Fire Department suppression general statistics and EMS general statistics. There was discussion of a new Fire-Ambulance Department being located on Main and 2nd Street, which would be leased railroad property of BN/SF holding. Derek answered questions from the committee members. 1. If the location would be acceptable because of being close to the railroad tracks. Derek explained that the land in the area of railroad tracks would be fine. Whereas, if leasing railroad property closer to the east end of town near the rail yards wouldn't be convenient. 2. What comments has he heard from Laurel citizens? He stated that comments have mainly been in acceptance. 3. About living quarters in the new fire-ambulance hall and what future plan there may be in staffing the department. Derek stated it would include re-organization of current Fire and EMS staff. Now the ambulance staff is paid-on-call and the fire staff is paid-per-call. An update was given by Mark Guy on the Police Department. He said applications are being taken for a police officer until October 31, 2009. The position is being funded by a three year grant and then the officer will continue to be hired by the city. Clete Knaub said he was familiar with the Police Department. He would like to get in contact with Derek and visit the Fire Department. Discussion on meeting date: Chuck Dickerson stated that he has a conflict on the same day as the Emergency Services meeting. He asked if there may be another evening of the week or another Monday of the month that would work for all the members to meet. It was decided that there wasn't another time that would work better so the meeting will be left for the Monday after the second council meeting. Chuck stated he would work it out and may have to excuse himself early from the meeting. Emelie Eaton invited everyone to come to the Scream At The Stream, which is a haunted house at Riverside Park for Halloween. Respectfully submitted, Neva Hall Secretary
