HEALTH INSURANCE COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 2, 2009
COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM

Since Don Nelson replaced Bud Arnold, who was the chairman of the old committee, he
is the chairman of the new committee.
A question was asked about the makeup of the committee's voting members. Copies of
Resolution No. R09-61 and the policy were distributed to the committee members.
Bill stated that the City of Laurel began the process to shop for health insurance a few
months ago, but MMIA had to have a decision and the city was not ready to consider a
change at that time. If new coverage is desired, the city needs to start the process right
away. The new timelines and consequences need to be distributed.
'The following items were discussed:
• History of MMIA Employee Benefit Plan
• Cost-saving measures put in place by MMIA
• "Shopping" for insurance
• Other coverages, including liability, workers' comp, and property insurance
• Focus on health insurance benefits, including voluntary plans (AFLAC, Colonial,
Med 125, etc.)
A meeting will be scheduled on Monday, September 14'', at 2:00 p.m.
There was discussion regarding the need to provide more education.
