OTHER'S PRESENT:
Joe Bradley Mary Netz, Pool Manager
Bob Gauthier Lee Langlinais, Asst. Man.
Dave Michael
A quorum (3 or more) present, the following action was taken
by the Committee:
The meeting was called to order by acting Chairman, Chuck Dickerson
at 5:37 p.m.
• A representative of the United Penecostal Church of Laurel asked
permission to sell cotton candy in Thompson Park on July 4th.
Permission was granted.
Mayor Gauthier reviewed the present pool policy for admission
with coupons. He explained the general complaints of parents
with this policy are:
1. Too many kids in the pool since no one leaves, and.
its harder for those in line to get in.
2. Too expensive to pay 40? for each time a child wants
to return to the pool.
3. Too much heat exposure when they stay at the pool without
a break.
Mary Netz, the Pool manager, explained that the stamping of hands
was done last year, and which the parents would like to see done
this year would be too much work for the guards. Keeping track
of money, baskets and writing numbers on hands keeps the two
guards in the office very busy.
Chuck Dickerson explained the Park Board's suggestion of shifts
with one re-admission per shift. Shifts would be 2? hours each
with an hour of adult/family swimming afterward.
Joe Bradley warned that the Committee, while experimenting with
this year's system and taking complaints of parents under advise-
ment should keep the system as simple as possible. He also
warned that the shift idea may cause more running around and
vandelism while children wait outside the pool.
Dave Michael explained shifts were used until 4 years ago, when
they changed to the current time schedule.
Mayor Gauthier said the pool would close Sunday, August 28th.
Chuck suggested the Park Board offer an open meeting for concerned •
parents to discuss the pool policies in March of next year.
Bill Brennan moved that the Committee vote to adopt the following
rule for the wading pool, seconded by Chuck.
1. Only children 6 and under allowed.
2. No chairs allowed.
3. No running, pushing or horseplay.
4. No smoking, food or beverages allowed.
Motion passed with all members voting "Yes"
Joe Bradley asked the Committee to recommend to the City Council
that they adopt the present policy at the pool while taking
under advisement the parents' concerns.
Milt asked again that we consider a method of allowing kids to
leave the pool once since so many parents asked for that specific
request.
The Pool Manager discussed several possible procedures with Chuck.
Bill Brennan moved that we leave the present policy, with no
re-admissions, as is. No one seconded. the motion.
Dave said $ 75-100 per day has been collected in daily admissions.
Milt explained that by allowing the kids to be at the pool 6 hours
a day without a break from the heat, we are saying that its OK when
we know healthwise that its not.
Mayor Gauthier explained that tickets may be sold at a reduced
es price to people who feel the pool is too expensive. Joe and the
\ Mayor are going to study that possibility.
Bill Brennan ag ain moved to keep the present pool policy and
recommend that the committee look into shifts and discount
tickets in the future, Milt seconded, the motion. Motion
carried 3--1.
Mary said the pool has been filling to about 250 kids, according
to the baskets used. There are 5 guards on the deck of the big
pool and 1 in the wading pool.
Dave asked. that the pool be closed at 6:00 p.m. on July 4th due
to crowd control. The request was accepted..
The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
Respectfully su?aitted,
LuAnne Bngh
