LAUREL URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY
APRIL 6, 2009
THE OWL CAFE - 203 E. MAIN STREET
Members present: Shirley McDermott, Dirk Frickel, Bill Kampfer, Dean Rankin, Daniel
Klein
Advisors present: Steve Zeier
Others present: Emily Eaton (City Council)
Big concern, non participation from city staff so we are requesting to be scheduled on the
next workshop. Emily says she will have that arranged
City employees don't seem to handle code enforcement, it is obvious and would help if
that was improved.
Emily says she knows a lady who wants to come to help save the grain elevators, she can
come to town the 1St week in June.
James says the historic building preservation is hard to make work because the owner get
tax credits not grants. A lot of money has to be spent to make a building look original.
Shirley will arrange Harry Gotwall to come to speak to us next week when he comes to
town. It will be the 13th to the 15th and will be coming to town about twice a month so
maybe we can use his knowledge frequently. He was instrumental in the rebuilding of
Billings, Save the Depot, The Horse of Course and other projects.
We will set up teams of 2 to follow up on projects to report back to the Agency.
We went thru the questions developed last week by Shirley, Dirk and James. The
following is the list by number of what we agreed on to print up and go to the owners:
1. Start with an explanation of the TIF district
2. Question #1, combine 2&7,6,8 & 12
3. #8 seems to be a good final question
Dean gave a good suggestion to closely review Streetscape and focus on one item at a
time. Some advanced work will be necessary to implement some items on Streetscape.
Each member is to pick 5 items for next week to merge a working list for the future.
