HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Minutes 07.05.2000MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF LAUREL July 5, 2OO0 A regular meeting of the city Council of the City of Laurel, Montana, was held in the Council Chambers and called to order by Mayor Chuck Rodgers at 7:00 p.m. on July 5, 2000. COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Lauren Van Roekel Gary Temple Ken Olson Mark Mace Gay Easton Bud Johnson Bill Staudinger COUNCIL MEMBERS ABSENT: None Mayor Rodgers asked the council to observe a moment of silence in behalf of the family of Miranda Fenner. MINUTES: Motion by Alderman Temple to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June 20, 2000, as presented, seconded by Alderman Staudinger. Motion carried 7-0. CORRESPONDENCE: Letter of June 22, 2000 from Sol Lovas, Lawyer, P.C Alderman Temple asked concerning this correspondence item. Attorney Leckie explained that Billie Riddle left the City of Laurel in her will. After the probate process is completed, the money would be placed in a restricted account for the designated purpose of a city pool. CONSENT ITEMS: a. Claims for the month of June 2000 in the amount of $496,517.67. A complete listing of the claims and their amounts is on file in the Clerk-Treasurer's Office. b. Receiving the Committee Reports into the Record. --Budget/Finance Committee minutes of June 19, 2000 were presented. --City Council Committee of the Whole minutes of June 20, 2000 were presented. --Emergency Services Committee minutes of June 26, 2000 were presented. --Budget/Finance Committee minutes of June 27, 2000 were presented. --Budget/Finance Committee minutes of June 28, 2000 were presented. c. Resolution No. R00-42: Resolution to accept the Montana Board of Crime Control Juvenile Accountability Incentive Grant. RESOLUTION NO. R00-42 RESOLUTION TO ACCEPT THE MONTANA BOARD OF CRIME CONTROL JUVENILE ACCOUNTABILITY INCENTIVE GRANT. The mayor asked if there was any separation of consent items. There was none. Motion by Alderman Johnson to approve the consent items as presented, seconded by Alderman Mace. Motion carried 7-0. SCHEDULED MATTERS: Council Minutes of July 5, 2000 Confirmation of Appointments. Airport Authority: Mayor Rodgers re-appointed Roy Zahm to the Airport Authority for a five-year term expiring June 30, 2005. Motion by Alderman Temple to approve the appointment of Roy Zahm to the Airport Authority for a five-year term expiring June 30, 2005, seconded by Alderman Staudinger. Motion carried 7-0. UNSCHEDULED MATTERS: a. Swimming pool, parks and cemetery. Mayor Rodgers stated that now is the time to form an oversight committee or task force to determine the direction for a swimming pool in Laurel. The committee should consist of citizens and representatives from the school and city council. Mayor Rodgers stressed that the safety needs of our children should come first. The Public Works Department recently distributed a parks survey. When the information is received, a committee will be formed to address the needs of the parks. Additional land is needed for future use at the cemetery. Mayor Rodgers stated that citizen involvement and additional finances are needed for these projects. b. Larry Tanglen. Larry Tanglen, a reporter from The Laurel Outlook, distributed a brochure to the council regarding open meetings. The brochure, a guide for journalists and citizens, answers frequently asked questions regarding access in Montana. c. Ken OIson - statement regarding Laurel Volunteer Fire Department. Alderman Olson presented the following statement: "! would like to take this opportunity to praise the efforts of our Laurel Volunteer Fire Department for protecting our city in a very professional manner, while still finding time to put together a program that honors our American heritage. I know a lot of people have remarked, and ! can say this because I was once a member of this proud group. When I was a part of it, it was hard work, and now time is demanded even more out of these men. The way these men have held themselves through the worst conditions just serves to remind me how fortunate we really are to have a group like this. I truly applaud your efforts. Thank you, Mr. Mayor.'
