Laurel, Montana,
May 17, 19270
The. City Council of the City of Laurel met in regular session in
the Council Chamber in the City Hall and was called to order by
President of the Council R. E.. Coy at 8:00 o'clock P. M. May 17,
1927.
Upon roll call,-the following aldermen answered present;
Porter
Chamberlin
Pe rry
Tor Bahl
Graves
Hartley
The minutes of May 3rd were read and approved.
The committee appointed at last meeting to investigate
i °1 the insurance for the firemen reported recommending that a blanket
olicy for the firemen be secured for $1000.00 each at a rate of
422.50. It was moved and seconded that the report of the committee
be adopted and that insurance be purchased as recommended. The
motion carried.
The Water Committee reported that they had investigated
the pumping bid, submitted by Phil Hohman at last meeting and re-
commended that no change be made in the. pumping arrangement. It
was moved by Graves and seconded by Hartley that the report be
adopted. The motion carried.
The City Engineer reported on the estimate for the
removing of excess dirt in the alley south of the Strand Theatre
Building and stated that the cost would be approximately $40.00.
It vas moved by Hartley and. seconded by Graves that the matter
be tabled. The motion carried.
The Street and Alley committee requested further time
to consider whether or not to recommend the purchase of a tractor.
Further time was granted.

A petition for the gravelling of a portion of Third
Avenue was presented and read. It was moved by Hartley and
seconded by Perry that the petition be referred back for more
signatures. The motion carried.
The petition for gravelling that portion of Main Street
north of the pavement from Pennsylvania Avenue to Holmes Lumber
Company's office, was presented for reconsideration. It was
moved by Perry and seconded by Graves that the City Attorney and
City Clerk be instructed to prepare necessary resolutions for
the creation of an improvement district. The motion carried.
The City Engineer reported that Mr. Carter was now
operating his plant at Billings and would be axle to furnish
gravel at this time.. It was moved by Perry and seconded by
Porter that the City Engineer be instructed to purchase one car.
The motion carried.
The matter of having sufficient funds in the Hanover
National Bank of New York to pay bonds and coupons that' were
payable there was discussed. - It was "moved. by Perry and seconded
by Porter that the City Treasurer be instaucted to place sufficient
funds in said bank in time for payment of bonds and coupons. The
motion carried.

The Clerk reported that tax books should be purchased
and should be. paid from the Ope rat ing ,fund. He stated that the
Laurel Outlook had submitted a bid of X89.87-and that the bid
included two binders at .,2'7.00 and stated that they had agreed
to get prices on cheaper binding. It was moved by Porter and
seconded by Hartley that the City Clerk 'be authorized to pur-
chase them as soon as corrected prices had been received. The
motion carried.
The matter of drainage on an underground drain passing
through Blocks 1, 2. and 25, mutt ing Subdivision was discussed,
The Mayor referred the matter to a committee consisting of Graves
and Hartley,
Talr. Perry reported that ILIrs. S chlavens had reported that
the alley back of the Prank Wright dance hall was becoming to 'be
a nuisance on dance nights and recommended that a light be placed
in the alley in order that people might be seen. The Mayor re-
cuested the chairman of the Police committee to interview lair.
Wright and see if he would not be willing to place one on the
back end of his dance hall.
Mr. Vordahl complained that boys and yound men were
playing baseball in the park. It was moved by Perry and seconded
by Graves that the matter be referred to the Park committee with
instructions to place sign. of trespassing and take any other
action they saw fit to have the practice stopped. The motion
carried.
It was moved by Chamberlin;. and seconded by Hartley
that we do now adjourn. The- motion carried.
