April 21, 1936#
The City Council of the City of Lau.rbl met in regular session
in the Council Chambers in the City Hall and was called to order by the
President of the Council Bela Vordahl at 7:30 o'clock P. M. April 21st
1936.
Upon Roll Call the, following aldermen answered present.
Vordahl
Hartley
Bidwell
Smith
Conrad
Bray
Reardon
Law
The minutes of April 7th and April 13th were read and approved.
A request from Harry E. Turner for a permit to build a frame
house 28 by 30 on Lots 28, 29 and 30 in Block 1, Nutting Subdivision, was
presented and read. House to be-all modern with sewer and water connections
and to be painted on the outside, It was moved by "gonrad and seconded by
Reardorthat the permit be granted. The motion carried.
The Libeeap Meat Company asked for a permit to remodel meat market
on Main Street. Put in new brick front, replaster and make necessary repairs
and also put on galvanized roof. Approximate cost around $1500, It was
moved by Law and seconded by Conrad that the permit be granted. The motion
carried.
A request from the BeFrance Garage to erect a sign 6 ft by 6 ft
fastened on posts on the corner of 4th5?ind Cottonwood Ave, was presented
and read. It Bas moved by Conrad and seconded by Smith that. the matter be
referred to the Street and Alley Committee with authority to act.. The
motion carried.
The Laurel Service Station asked for permission to erect a temporary
sign 2 ft by 3 ft mounted on poles 5 ft by 2 by 4, during the time the under-
pass was under construction The sign to be located near 5th Avenue on Main
Street. Sign to be placed so as not to obstruct vision, It was moved by
Smith and seconded by Bray that the matter be referred to the Street and
Alley Committee with authority to act. The motion carried,
Peter Rockvan and Rev. Stockdale appeared before the Council and
asked for a permit to reshingle the roof of Mir Savion's Lutheran Church
with non firefroof shingles. After some discussion it was moved by Hartley
and seconded by Reardon that the permit be granted. Upon Roll Call,'rtley,
Sdwell, Smith and Reardon voted Aye and Conrad, Bray and Law voted No. The
motion carried.
Paul Vold appeared before the Council and asked for permit for
0, M. Wold to move two bog cars on property at No. 16 Wyoming Avenue. Cars
to be cut in two and hipped together to make a double garage. To be placed
on foundation and roof changed and,to be painted on the outside. It was
moved by Vordahl and seconded by Smith that the permit be granted. The
motion carried,
RESOLUTION NO. 458.
Resolution #e. 456 being a resolution declaring an emergency
exists requiring additional expenditures from the General Fund and directing
publication of notice of a public hearing, was presented and read, It was
moved by Law and seconded by Conrad that-Resolution No. 458 be passed and
adopted. Upon Noll Call, all aldermen present voted Aye and said resolution
No. 448-.-,was declared passed and adopted.
A supplement to Permit No. 41143 regarding maintenance of water
pipe line upon Northern Pacific eeauay company is right of way at Laurel,
was presented and read. After some discussion, it was moved by Hartley and
seconded by Smith that the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to enter into
an agreement with the Northern Pacific Railway `company. The motion carried.
B. L. Price reported that he had not been able to meet with the
Finance 80mmittee to go into the matter of back taxes on City lots

and Johnston had asked to be fefunded, but would meet with the committee
and report at a later date.
A, petition to construct a sewer, to run from 5th street on,Sixth
Avenue to 3rd Street, then from 3rd Street and Sixth Kvenue to Fifth Avenue
joining on sewer at that pointy Was presented and read. After apme dis-
cussion a motion was made by Hartley and seconded by Conrad that`. the matter
be referred to sever corrmittee. The motion carried.
A ,petition to construct a sidewalk from Ivan -Lyons property line
south on Sixth Avenue to 3rd Street,, then east to 5th Avenueq.was presented
and read. A motion was made by Conrad and seconded by Hartley_Athat the matter
be referred to the Street and Alley,Committee. The motion carried.
Dr. Broughton arrived and presided during the remainder of the
meeting,
.Mr. P. A. Johnston appeared before the Council and presented, plans
for Parking Station and Information Bu;eau on the south side of Vein atreet
between Underpass and dannston Lumber bompany. John Moran, J. F. MacDonald
and-Paul Wold also spoke about the need of the City for a place;to pare. ears
and asked the Council to co-operate with the Commercial Club in securing
one;for Laurel, After some discussion, Mayor' Broughton appointed Vordahl,
Conrad and Bray as a committee to meet with a committee f2om the. CoIl1IDB-rcial
Club composed of B. L. Price, P. A. Johnston and J F. MacDonald to draw up .
a xesolation. The Mayor -declared a recess.
The Committee reported back the following Resolution..,
Resolution No. 459
Resolution No. 459 being a resolution recommending-to the Montana
State Highway Commission the impTpvement of the Northern Pacific Rail?ay
Company's right of way on the south side of Main Street from First Avenue
east to_Johnston Lumber Company in the City of Laurel was presented and
read. It was moved by Hartley and seconded by Bidwell that- the resolution
be passed and adopted, Upon Roll all aldermen present voted Aye and the
said Resolution No, 459 was declared passed and adopted.
A. motion was made by Conrad and seconded by yaw that A ,copy of
that the
Resolution be sent to the Yorthern Pacific Railway ?emp$ny and
Mayor contact the railway dompany and the State Highway ?'ommission. The
motion carried.
It was moved and seconded that we do now adjourn. The motion`
carried,
