October 5, 1937
The City Council of the City of Laurel met in regular session in
the Council Chamber and was called to order by the City Clerk at 7:30
o1clock P. 14., October 5, 1937.
Upon roll call the following aldermen answered present:
Geo. H. Smith
Scoarse
Thomson
Wooters
Gomer
Law
A quorum being present and in the absence of the IMayor and President
of the Council, it was moved by Scoarse and seconded by Gomer Mr. Law
be nominated to act as chairman. The motion carried.
The minutes of September 21st were read and approved.
The Yayor arrived and presided.
Mr. C. W. Laird appeared before the Council asking for permission
to erect a temporary building to be used as an electric and radio shop
on the Reese Price property at the corner of First Avenue and First
Street. He stated he would like to leave the building there about one
year. Mr. Law requested the permit be submitted in writing. There-
upon, an application for a permit by C. W. Laird to erect a frame store
building, size approximately 12x20, on the Reese Price property on
the corner of First Avenue and First Street, to cost approximately
$300,00, to be removed at the end of one year and placed on a concrete
foundation, was presented and read. After discussion it was moved by
Gomer and seconded by ',Hooters the permit be granted. Upon roll call
Geo. Smith, Thomson and Law voted no and Scoarse, Wooters and Gomer
voted yes. The vote being a tie the l111byor voted yes and the motion
was declared passed.
The report of the Police officers for the month of September was::
presented and read. It was moved by Thomson and seconded by Scoarse
the report be approved. The motion carried.
The report of the Police Judge for the month of September was
presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by Thomson the
report be approved. The motion carried.
The report of the City Treasurer for the month of September was
presented and read. It was moved by Thomson and seconded by Scoarse
the report be approved. The motion carried.
The report of the City Water Department by the City Treasurer was
presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by Wooters the
report be approved. The motion carried.
The report of the City Clerk for the month of September was presented
and read. It was moved by Thomson and seconded by Scoarse the report
be approved. The motion carried.
The bills for the month of September were referred to the Finance
Committee and after due deliberation the committee reported back recom-
mending the payment of the following bills:

It was moved by Thomson and seconded by Wooters the report of the Finance
Committee be accepted and warrants issued in the manner recommended by
the Committee. The motion carried.
An application for a permit by S. W. Ward to construct a frane and
stucco garage size 18x22, concrete foundation on Lots 15 and 16, Block
14, Nutting Subdivision, was presented and read. It was moved by
Thomson and seconded by Geo. H. Smith the permit be granted. The
motion carried.
An appli.cayion for a permit by Ivan Lyons to construct a front porch
size 7x18, cement foundation, to be painted or stucco at 420 Sixth Avenue
was presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by ti"footers the
permit be granted. The motion carried.
The City Engineer reported that Barry O'Leary was ready to start
laying the water line across the river to Riverside Park.
The City Engineer reported that at the request of the Street and
Alley Committee he had contacted Mr. Durland and that a gravel crusher
would be placed near Laurel in a short time and that something could be
worked out when he came here. He also stated the County cost was
approximately 17? per yard. The matter was referred to the Street and
Alley Committee.
Mr. Thomson presented the matter of replacing water mains on First
Avenue. After discussion it was moved by Thomson and seconded by Wooters
bids be advertised for 8 and 10 inch pipe and fittings. Upon roll call
all aldermen present voted aye and the motion was declared passed.
