HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Minutes 06.01.1937------------- - Minutes of the City Council of Laurel June 1, 1937 The City Council of the City of Laurel met in regular session in the Council Chamber and was called to order by Mayor Broughton at 7:30 otclock P. M. June 1, 1937. Upon roll call the following aldermen answered present: Geo. H. Smith Conrad Scoarse I Wooters Thomson Dr. I. N. Smith Gower Law The minutes of May 18th and May 24th were read and approved. Mr. C. W. Wardell appeared before the Council in regards to pur- chasing Lots 1 to 6 inclusive of Block 1, Laurel Youngs Subdivision belonging to the City and discussed plans of a modern tourist camp. After discussion it was moved by Wooters and seconded by Gomer the lots be advertised for sale. Upon roll call All aldermen present voted aye and the motion was declared passed. The report of the Chief of Police for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Conrad and seconded by Thomson the report be approved. The motion carried. The report of the Police Judge for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Conrad and seconded by Law the report be approved. The motion carried. The report of the Health Officer for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by Thomson the report be approved. The motion carried. The report of the eater Commissioner for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Conrad and seconded by Thomson the report be approved* The motion carried. The report of the City Treasurer for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Conrad and seconded by Scoarse the report bd approved. The motion carried. The report of the City Clerk for the month of May was presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by Thomson the report be approved. The motion carried. The bills for the month of May were referred to the Finance Committee and after due deliberation the coramittee reported back recommending the payment of the following bills: R. The motion carried. An application for a permit by Mrs. B. J. Kiederowski to erect a frame and painted house size 20x28, with two porches and garage size 12x18 to cost approximately $700.00 on Lot 8, Block 11, Laurel Realty Subdivision was presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded Thomson the permit be granted. The motion carried. A bond for Alfred J. Ranger for $10,000.00 with the Standard Accident Insurance Company for a term of two years was presented and read. It was moved by Law and seconded by Conrad the bond be approved. The motion carried. A letter from Mrs. Lola Cooper enclosing a safety inspection report of the Sewing room was presented and read. This being the time set for receiving bids on cement the City Clerk was instructed to open and receive all bids. Bids were received from Thompson Yards, Inc. submitting a price of 02.95 per barrel and from V. C. Johnston Lumber Company submitting a price of 72X for paper bags and 68¢ for cloth bags. After discussion it was moved by Conrad and seconded by Thomson the Mayor declare a recess and the bids be referred to the Purchasing Committee and City Engineer. The motion carried. The Committee reported back recommending the purchase of cement from V. C. Johnston Lumber Company in cloth bags at 68,d per bag. It was moved by Conrad and seconded by Thomson the report of the Committee be accepted. Upon roll call all aldermen present voted aye and the motion was declared passed. The application blank for sidewalk and curb was presented and read. Mr. G. W- Fenton, representing the American Legion, appeared before the Council in regards to getting the water across the river to Riverside Park and reported that Mr. Ephland had written a letter granting per- mission to fasten the pipe to the new bridge. After discussion.it was moved by Conrad and seconded by I. N. Smith the matter be referred to the Water Committee and Water Commissioner with authority to act. The motion carried. Air. Law presented the matter of fencing the reservoir. After discussion it was moved by Gomer and seconded by Law the fence be erected at the reservoir. The motion carried. The revised lease with the United States of America for a Girlts Camp at Riverside Park was presented and read. Mr. Thomson presented the matter of installing the new pump stating that Mr. Brohaugh would install it for x;40.00 with four men and two days time. After discussion it was moved by Conrad and seconded by Gomer the matter be referred to the Water Committee.and Water Commissioner with authority to act. The motion carried. Mr. Law presented the matter of cleaning the gutters on Main Street and changing the liquor license receipts from the General Fund to the Police Fund. It was moved by Law the policeman's salary be raised to $125.00 per month beginning July 1, 1937 and they clean the gutters on Main Street. There being no second the motion was lost. Mr. Thomson presented the matter of delinquent water bills outside the City limits. After discussion it was moved by Conrad and seconded by Wooters the water be turned off or the bill collected in full by the Minutes of the City Council of Laurel June 1, 1937 - continued - next Council meeting.
