I am convinced that any attempt to repeal this ordinance would be only for a sslfish interest. With no regard for the general welfare of the city. Z there.£ore urge you to give this matter much thought.. Thank you for any consideration. sincerely, (Si~n~d) W.T.Johnson May 12, 1961 The Hon. John Besl.anwitch, Mayor and the Cit~r Council of the City of Laurel gentlemen: As Ministers of ~hurehes in the Laurel Community and also as citizens of this city, w~ the undersigned wish to go on record as opposing amending; the ordinance prohibiting 1i~~ music in the bars within the City of Laurel. 1,~e realize that the b~.r owners may b~ in financ3.al difficulty and to that extent we sympathize with theme. However, we believe that the public interst requires the strictest control of liquor establishments. We know fro~a past experience th~.t allowing dancing and live music in the bars creates an undesirable situation. We have had such a Situation in'the past in Laurel and other cities have found the same to be true. I~~ - Minutes of the City Council of Laurel That is the reason why 1-,he~ ordinance was passed in the fixst place. Y~Te do not feel that the ~itu~,~i~n hay changed to such an extent as to justify repeal of the ordinance now. Laurel is a small town and, the bars are all concentrated around the main street aria of town. The women and children cannot avoid passing by these places and because this is a small town we feel the liquor establishrients should be more stringently controlled than i.n larger cities. We cannot help feeling that by allowing dancing and live music Main Str~~t, ~,aurel would become an uncae53.rabl~ area of this fair city for a large s~gme~nt of the people of t~~is community.
