CEMETERY CO~94ITTEE
DATE: MAY 18( 1993 TIME: 10:15 A.M.
PLACE OF MEETING - CITY HALL
MEMBERS PRESENT:
OTHERS PRESENT:
Norman Orr, Chairman
Lloyd Shay
Chuck Rodgers
Jim Worthington
Lee Barndt
Sharon Herman
A quorum (3 or more) present, the following action was taken by the
committee:
Jim Worthington reported that the pump at the cemetery has been
repaired and should be good for about 3 years.
It was stated that a new riding lawn mower has been budgeted for
next year. At this time it has not been cut from the budget.
Sharon Herman reported that she has received many complaints
regarding the dandelions at the cemetery and also how dry it is.
It was reported that the water was just put in the ditch as of last
weekend & at this point we don't have any person who is qualified
to do spraying for the city.
There was discussion regarding a headstone that was just put up in
section "B" that does not meet the specification. The name on the
headstone is Beverly Zivaljic and was put up by Billings Monument.
Motion by Lloyd Shay that a letter be written to the monument
company stating that the stone must be removed and redone to meet
the required specifications. Seconded by Lee Barndt. Motion
carried.
Discussion regarding which sections of the cemetery should be
opened next. The section we are using now is filling up fast and
it won't be long before we will need more space. It was decided
that Section "B" should be filled first and then continue on in
Section "J" behind the veterans. The first 4 rows of Section "J"
will be reserved for vets.
In the Catholic. Cemetery it was decided to fill the first 4 rows of
the Eastern most section before moving to the Western section. At
this point in time the road does not go completely around the
Eastern Section and until the road and curbs and gutters are put in
it would not be feasable to use the backend of this section.
It was suggested that consideration be given to improving the curbs
and gutters and roads at the cemetery.
Headstones in both these new sections (Section "J" and the Western
Section of the Catholic Cemetery) must either be beveled or flat
and be set according to the current regulations.
Sharon Herman stated that she has a request from a Cindy Weinheimer
to bury the creamated remains of Nellie DeNittis, a past longtime
Laurel resident, in the Veterans section of the Laurel Cemetery.
Cindy sent a copy of the discharge papers and everything seems to
be in order. It was the recommendation of the committee that
permission be granted for the ashes to be placed in the veterans
section but to use a corner lot that cannot be used for a full
burial. It was also stated that the headstone must be a
traditional white marble veterans headstone.
There being no further business to come before the board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Herman
Deputy City Clerk
