CEMETERY COMMITTEE
DATE: NOV. 17, 1993 TIME: 3:05
PLACE OF MEETING - CITY HALL
P.M.
MEMBERS PP~ESENT:
OTHERS PRESENT:
Norman Orr, Chairman
Lloyd Shay
Albert Ehrlick
Sue Strand
Lee Barndt
Sharon Herman
A quorum (3 or more) present, the following action was taken by the
committee:
Sharon Herman stated that she had a request from Bill Frickel
regarding the purchase price of the cemetery lots. Mr. Frickel
stated that he has been a resident of Laurel all his life and a
year ago he moved outside the city limits. He feels he should be
able to purchase the lots for $200.00 instead of $250.00. It was
the consensus of the committee that we not make any exception to
the Ordinance at this time. Motion by Loyd Shay to charge Mr.
Frickel the non-city rate of $250.00. Second by Albert Ehrlick.
Motion carried.
Discussion regarding a request from Billings Monument to install a
metal hangar for flower pots in the concrete base of the headstone.
Sue Strand reported that this could be a problem if the backhoe has
to locate itself over a headstone when digging a grave. She
stated that she spoke to the man who was setting the headstone and
he decided to install a pipe in the concrete to put the hangar in
and then it could be removed if need be. The committee agreed this
would be ok. Sue Strand stated that there are some of these metal
hangars that are just stuck in the dirt and they are a problem when
she has to mow.
Discussion regarding the grave for the O'Toole Baby. It was
reported that this grave has all kinds of toys and flowers on it
and tends to present problems when. Sue does the mowing. The
parents have been taking care of the maintenance of the grave but
she still has to get off the mower and move everything and put it
all back when she mows. It was suggested that a notice be put in
the newspaper in the spring telling people when flowers etc. must
be removed and if this doesn't work a letter could be written.
There was discussion regarding setting aside an area just for
creamations. No decision was made at this time but it will be
discussed again when the next section is opened.
The Committee would like to recommend that the opening and closing
charges be revised as follows:
From To
Adult grave opening & closing 100.00
Saturdays and Holidays 200.00
$150.00
225.00
Baby grave opening & closing 50.00 75.00
Saturdays and Holidays 100.00 125.00
Creamation open & closing
Saturdays and Holidays
50.00 75.00
100.00 125.00
Motion by Norman Orr to recommend these changes to the City
Council. Seconded by Albert Ehrlick. Motion carried.
Discussion about spraying for dandelions and weeds at the Cemetery.
Sue Strand stated that she was studying for the test but was unsure
if she would take it or not. It was suggested that maybe we could
contract with someone to mix the spray and then the city crew could
do the actual spraying. Loyd Shay to look into this.
There being no further business to come before the board, the
meeting was adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Herman
Deputy City Clerk
