HomeMy WebLinkAboutCemetary Commission Minutes 05.08.1995DATE: MINUTES CEMETERY COMMITTEE May 8, 1995 TIME: 5:00 P.M. PLACE OF MEETING - CITY HALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Albert Ehrlick, Lloyd Shay Cathy Gabrian Chairman (late) Dave Michael Norman Orr OTHERS PRESENT: None A quorum (3 or more) present, the following action was taken by the committee: Cathy updated the committee on the background of a situation that recently came up. Rue Seaman, a teenager, died in 1981 and was buried in the Laurel Cemetery. His mother has indicated that at that time, she was told she could have the cremains of herself and her mother buried in this same grave, at some point in the future. Recently her mother passed away and when making the arrangements, she asked about this and Cathy told her the city only allowed one cremains to be buried with a full burial. Lee Barndt was not at the meeting but he told Cathy that 14 years ago very few cremations were being done and she may very well have been told she could do this. It was a situation that had not come up before. It was questioned whether we have a section set aside for cremains and Cathy stated we do not. We will be moving into a new section and if the need arises for this, we could possibly use part of the baby section. Dave Michael stated that the majority of the cremains are buried in a lot with a full burial or 'in a full lot with the intent of having two cremains in one lot. Discussion and the committee felt there was no problem with having two cremains in with a full burial but the problem comes with marking the graves. It was stated that we currently allow one headstone and one footstone per grave. We don't want to get to where the graves are completely covered with cement and markers. It was the consensus of the committee to allow two cremains with a full burial but only one headstone and one footstone. It was stated that more than one name could be put on a footstone as long as it meets our size regulations for footstones. Motion by Norman Orr to allow two cremains with a full burial and to only allow one headstone and one footstone per grave, seconded by Lloyd Shay. Motion carried. A brief discussion regarding the need to purchase additional land for the cemetery in the future. There being no further business to come before the committee the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Gabrian Deputy City Clerk
