• A regular meeting of the City Council of the ~i-~y of Laurels Montana,
was held in the Council Chambers and was called to order by Mayor John Beslan-
witeh at 7x30 o~cZock, P. M.~ on Tuesday, January 7~ 19bl~.
Upon. taking roll call the following aldermen answered presents.
Jacob Ruff Roy Edwards Kenneth Olson Gerald L. Gasp

The minutes of the previous meting were read. Motion was made by Ruff and seconded bar Ebersviller that the minutes be approved as read:
The employees union req~.ested the use of the council chambers for
their regular m~;eting to be held the evening of January l~.th~ 196l~. Motion was
made by Ebersviller aiad seconded by Olson that tha request be gr~.fited. Motion
carried.
~oune3.1 received a request from John W. ~a.clanan, civil Defense Direc-
-Gor~ to ~.llo~' a High School teacher .08¢ per mile for ten trips to Billings, one
each week for ten weeks, to permit, him to attend a Civil Defer~e ~chool~ after
which h~ will be qualified to be an instructor in the ~ivi.l Defense procedures.'
.This would amount to a maximum of ~2~..~.~ Motion was made by Qlson and seconded ~ by Ruff that mileage be allowed in this amount. Motion carried.
Report of the Polio Jude was presented. Mo~~on eras made by Ebers-
viller and Seconded by Olson that these reports be approved. Motion carried.
Reports of-the Patrolmen were presented. Motion was made by Eb~rsv-
viller and seconded by 01son that these reports be approved. Motion carried.
Health Officerts report and report of the Library were presented.
Motion was made by Ruff and seconded by Palm that these reports be approved.
Motion carried..

The City Engineer was asked to give a report on the slush ice problem.
City Engineer read a letter from the School district requesting lights,
as follows:

Dear Sir
I would like to discuss Frith you the possibility of placing street
lights on 8th directly opposite the Senior High School. Them are t~ao light
pops there and since they belong to the City i~ s~~ms they cou3.d be used.
Also, i~ tree installation of the hydrant at the corner of 9th strut
and lst Avenue possible in this ureather? Our insurance costs world be lowered
considerably as soon as this is dons:.

After discu5sian, motion was made by Ruff and seconded by Palm that the City
G7_erk write a letter to the Montana Power Company requesting these lights, after
investigating how many lights the District would like to have and where they axe
to be placed. Motion carried.
Peter D. Thomson appeared before the Council and was asked to give a report on the condition of the city skating rink.
Ebersviller reported on the City insurances and alsa reported an future
planning, and recommended that the pity avail itself of this service. The Mayor
stated that the water committee should make a much f'urth~r study of this situation.
Ma~ror asked the City Engineer to report on the purchase of the truck
for the backl~o~.
It was reported that dam Ca n.`w~.a expected to ask the council for a
.through street on 4th Avenue. 01scn stated that some person; wanted .four way
stop on fourth Avenue and fourth street. This matter was turned over to the
Police Chief and the Police Committee. Olson asked that the first ward klderm~n ~e included in this investigation, ar~d asked that they contact the people in this
ward to find out their wishes.

It was reported that the City pcriodicdlly rented certain equipment
from autsiders. Also reported that our pity Engineer owns the same type of
equipm~;nt. After discussions motio~i was made by Nave and seconded by Leuthold that the City use the equipment belonging to the City Engineer whenever needed
at a rental rate of ~l0.OC1 per hour, and the City to furnish the gas and oil.
Motion carried.
Thomsen ap~aeared Y~efare she Council in behalf of the Kiwanis Club in
regard to the Park that is to be developed which is partially inside and par- tiall~ outside the City Limits. After discussion, motion was made by Ebersviller
az~cl seconded by Palm that the Council go on record as being opposed to th.e o~Enin~
up off' a ~tr~et through this proposed park s?te. Motion carried.
Olsen reported that the Pc~Iicc Commi.tt~e had contacted the I~1od.ern
Chevrolet regarding thei~° claim of $162.00 for rental of a vehicle while the police car was being repaired. After discussian~ motion was made by Olson and
Seconded by Ruff that th~.s claim be ~.llowed. Motion carried.
Olson reported that the residents ~n the vicinity of ~jontana ~.~renue
south cif Sixth Street East have expressed the desire to be given priority if them
~_s going tee be a yew water line in that portion of the city and would 3ike to have this done before any sprinkling district goes into effect.
Question regarding the covering of the ditch near the Tubman property
on Alder. It was decided that Daley dive Tubman an estimate of t~.e cost, and
that he b~ authorized to go ~hPad with the work, if the price is agreeable.
Palm reported that a battery charger had been purch~.sed between meet- ings~ since it was a uerj~ good buy atxd decision had to be made before the comp-
an~r took inventory.
Ruff brought up the subject of dogs.
Ruff mentioned aomp~.ain.ts on signs.
Ruff had a corrzp~ pint on a garage in the alley, and a, curb and gutter
problem on Fourth be~w~en 1st and Main.
Question of a paragraph in tine forking Agreement was brought up regard-
ing Sick Leave. Ater various reports, the TZayor appointed Ebersviller, Olson, and Ruff as a committee to investigate this matter.
ThEre being no further business to come before the Council at this tirr~,
motion was diary made and seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motic~ carried.
